What happens to a place when its meaning disappears?
Between 1890 and 1960, the Catholic Church in Flanders experienced a strong revival. This led to the construction of various Maria parks: devotional gardens featuring not only a Lourdes grotto, but also other fully reconstructed biblical scenes. You can walk past Babylonian temples and even enter the rock cave with the tomb of Jesus. All of it built out of devotion, using plywood and concrete.
Now it is hard to imagine, but these places once attracted crowds. From believers in procession to full-scale pilgrimages. Today, the sites have an odd and desolate atmosphere.
